Eleftheriou Phaedra

Eleftheriou Phaedra holds a degree in Chemistry (A.U,TH. 1991) and a PhD in Biochemistry (A.U.TH. 1998). From 1998 to 2008, she worked in research projects or as an academic teacher at the Departments of Chemistry and Pharmacy of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, at the Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology of the University of Thessaly, at the Prefecture of Thessaloniki and at the Departments of Nutrition & Dietetics and Medical Laboratory studies of ATEITH. Since 2008, after her election to the position of Assistant Professor of Clinical Chemistry – Biochemistry, she has been a member of the Department’s Academic Staff (DEP), serving as an Associate Professor since 2015 and a first-level Professor since 2019.
■ In parallel to the teaching and research work, she served the Department in various positions, as a member of the Practical Exercise placement Committee (2008-2016), as the responsible for Undergraduate Diploma Thesis assignement (2009-2023), as a member of the Department’s Quality Assurance Team (2009-2016 & 2019-22), as a member of the Department’s Curriculum Reformation Committee (2014, 2019), member of the Department’s Curriculum Certification Committee (2018, 2021), Deputy President of the Department (2018-19), member of the Quality Assurance Unit, QAU, of ATEITH (2016-17), member of the QAU of International Hellenic University, IHU (2020-2025), member of the Strategic Planning Committee of IHU (2020-2025) etc.
■ At the undergraduate level, she has taught/has been teaching theoretical and laboratory courses in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Clinical Chemistry, Enzymology – Enzyme Engineering, Molecular Diagnostics, Experimental Animals & Cell Cultures, Informatics Applications in Biomedical Sciences, and chapters in Pharmacology – Toxicology, Diagnostic Laboratory Organization & Quality Control, Mechanisms and Biochemical markers of Aging, Dementia and Chronic Diseases, Forensics & Forensic Laboratory Techniques, English Medical Terminology. ▪ He has supervised more than 80 Bachelor/Diploma Theses, 60 of which were experimental research.
▪ He has taught/is teaching in Master’s Degree Programs, including “Bio-Medical and Molecular Sciences in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Diseases”, “Diabetes Care”, etc. ▪ She is the supervisor or a member of the three-member Committee of Master’s and Doctorate Theses.
■ Her research interests include:
– Study of Enzyme Inhibitors and Activators with application in the Treatment, Diagnosis and Investigation of the pathophysiology of diseases.
-Computational studies on the Prediction of stable binding of inhibitors and in vitro determination of inhibitory action. Target enzymes: phosphatases (SHP-2, PTP1B, LAR, alkaline placental phosphatase etc.,), peptidases (DPP4), squalene synthetase (SQS), amylase, cyclooxygenase (COX-1, COX-2), lipoxygenase (LOX), nucleases, telomerase, HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT), HIV-1 integrase, DNA-gyrase, etc. Application in the development of novel drugs for the treatment of Type II Diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, inflammation, Noonan syndrome, HIV-1, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agents. Application to the selective determination of isoenzymes of diagnostic interest (alkaline phosphatase, amylase, etc.)
– Immune response to dietary antigens and infectious factors. Investigation of the association with cancer, autoimmune and degenerative diseases (Hashimoto’s Disease, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s & Mental Disorders)
– Study of vitamin D in patients with various types of cancer, autoimmune and degenerative diseases.
– Free radicals and antioxidants. Identification and correlation with pathologic and normal conditions.
– Study of biological markers in patients with metabolic diseases (diabetes and dyslipidemias) and their correlation with the pathophysiology and complications of the disease.
■ She has participated as a researcher, principal Investigator or supervisor in 17 research projects.
▪ She has 230 publications: 47 full original articles in peer-reviewed international Scientific Journals (scopus) with a maximum impact factor of I.F. 4.8, 185 announcements of research results at conferences with publication of abstracts in 45 Scientific Journals (maximum I.F. 14.0) and 140 books of conference abstracts. 5 research publications awarded by National or International bodies
▪ She has 1582 hetero-citations according to Google Scholar (31-01-2025) or 1319 hetero-citations according to Scopus (27-02-2025)

-She has written 2 books and is a co-author of chapters in books of international publishing groups.
